*If you like to Ski/Board on Mtnface of Ice- This is Your Spot!

Whiteface, aka Ice Face, is the first mountain I have ever gone to Snowboard. I’m sure it’s delightful when the ice has thawed.
In winter, the iciness of this mountain is a near deathtrap.

A crew of close friends headed up. Most were total newbies but a couple of guys were pretty good. All of us except those two did a quickie one hour snowboarding lesson. Then we went to the peak of the mountain to check out our new found skills.

Or lack there of.

One friends gave up early. She basically slid down on her bum until it was flat enough to walk down. The rest of us powered through, falling on our bums, elbows, knees, etc.

Since I have a tendancy to go straight away at things, I fell on my face more than any other spot. The good thing is that my bottom was spared. I’d been planning to board without googles but a friend who had decided not to hit the mountain, lent me hers. From all that falling on my face, if I had gone without goggles, I would have given myself a nose job, I fell over so much.

Now I must say these falls weren’t so much from spasticness. It was that we were super newbies and the our more adroit friends were silly enough to suggest be head all the way to the top on the first run. It scared so many of the group that most never did another run that day or even went boarding again.

It’s worth visting the town of Alpine, some fun night spots, shopping and good restaurants, but steer clear of the mountain unless you are skilled or have a lot of bum padding.

We're all just back from Killington Mountain where we spent the nice long MLK weekend. It was good to see Kim and Jason, plus it snowed like 2 feet the night after we got there. Whoohoo!
I got to use my honed boarding skills to surprise Gino and Rob. Gino had been with me out at Mt. Snow late last month when we got the ski house so he'd known I'd had some progress, but Rob was near bowled over.

This is as close to the best description as I can provide since what I actually did was board out from the drop off point of the chair lift and make as if I was coming straight towards him. Rob, having seen me board before with Bec, had a sudden stricken look, thinking that he was going to be going down soon like a bowling pin. At the last possible moment I carved around him. I almost fell over laughing when his jaw dropped open with shock. Heh.

Okay. Yes, I was that bad. Well not exactly bad. Just not good. Now I am better. Perhaps even good. I need to remember to get a Mountain Pass again this year to keep the skills up.

One good thing about braving the cold wintry winds of Vermont is that when you come back you are totally enured to the NYC weather. Bah! Cold? This is not COLD? Cold is whooshing down the side of a snowy mountain. Eyelashes frozen. Lips cracking. That's cold. NYC is veritably balmy in consideration.

I'm totally diggin' the freebie Dunkin Donuts coupons FI got from signing on with the local bank. Used to be you got a toaster or a blender. Now they give you coupons for coffee. I guess it is something. I'm not complaining. One tall decaf skinny Hazelnight please! Oh and you also get a free donut.

My nemesis the donut. I got a "Holiday" donut- Cranberry Orange Nut. Mmmm. Doesn't it sound yummy? Wish I could tell you how much yummy it was. You'll have to ask Junior. He's the smallest squirrel in the park. I walked over to mull over my coffee and enjoy the winter weather in the park and watch the squirrels, as is my custom, thinking about how donuts are THE DEVIL, and what do you know? I dropped it. My Holiday donut. Argh.

Eh. Like I need a donut. Junior definitely needed it more than I did.
Did squirrels eat donuts? He did clamp it in his mouth and pull it along. And he did pretty well to his credit. It may have been the berries and nuts in the donut that appealed to him, otherwise I don't know that his squirrelness would have been interested in the fried dough of it.
Spunky thing, he is too.
The pigeons wasted no time descending down from the telephone wires to check out what he was dragging along. Two of them got close enough to start pecking at the donut. Seems that there is not protocol when it comes to found goodies on the street. Junior never let go. He got away with a good sized chunk but the pigeons got the bulk of the donut.

Smart squirrel, maybe he figured he'd rather have something than nothing. Or it may have been that the piece he made off with was as much as he could realistically carry. Either way, everyone one ended up with something.
